That is why we have incorporated the Fotona LightWalker® dental laser into many of the procedures we perform every day. At JVR Dental, we use laser dentistry with Fotona LightWalker® in Walnut Grove, BC, to support a range of treatments involving both hard and soft tissues. The LightWalker combines two complementary laser wavelengths, Er:YAG and Nd:YAG, allowing us to work with hard tissues, such as teeth and bone, as well as soft tissues, such as the gums.

Root Canal Treatment
One of our favourite applications for the Fotona LightWalker® is during root canal treatment.
The root canal system inside a tooth is much more complex than it may appear on an X-ray. There can be small branches, irregular spaces, and areas that traditional instruments simply cannot physically reach.
During root canal treatment, we use the LightWalker® to activate the cleaning solution inside the tooth. Fotona’s SWEEPS® technology uses very short laser pulses to create movement within the irrigating solution, helping it flow through the complex root canal system and reach areas that may be difficult to access with instruments alone.
In our office, laser-assisted irrigation can be incorporated throughout the cleaning process to support thorough cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system before the tooth is sealed.
We can also combine this technology with 3D CBCT imaging, which helps us diagnose the problem, better understand the anatomy of the tooth, and locate and plan for the canals before treatment begins.
Because we also have CEREC same-day crown technology in our office, many suitable teeth can have their root canal, build-up, and final ceramic crown completed in one visit. This can reduce the number of appointments and allow us to restore and protect the tooth as efficiently as possible.
Gum Disease & Periodontal Care
Lasers can also be used as part of periodontal treatment.
The LightWalker® combines two complementary wavelengths that interact differently with dental tissues. Depending on the procedure, laser energy can be used to help remove diseased tissue and bacterial biofilm, clean the root surface, and manage periodontal pockets.
Because laser periodontal procedures can be precise and minimally invasive, they may involve less bleeding and discomfort and a shorter recovery than some conventional surgical approaches.
This gives us another option when treating gum disease and allows us to tailor treatment to the individual patient.
Gum Contouring & Cosmetic Dentistry
Sometimes a beautiful smile isn’t only about the teeth—the gums play an important role too.
The Fotona LightWalker® allows us to precisely reshape or contour gum tissue when appropriate. This can be useful for correcting an uneven gumline, exposing more of a tooth for a restoration, or improving the proportions of the teeth and gums as part of a smile makeover.
Laser treatment gives us precise control over the tissue while also helping manage bleeding during the procedure.
We can even combine laser gum contouring with our digital smile design and CEREC technology, allowing us to plan the teeth and gums together rather than treating each part of the smile separately.
Fillings & Conservative Dentistry
The LightWalker® can work on more than just the gums. Its Er:YAG wavelength can also be used on hard dental tissues.
In selected cases, this allows us to use the laser for cavity preparation and conservative restorative procedures. The precision of the laser allows us to focus treatment on the area that needs attention while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
Some laser procedures may also be performed with little or no local anaesthetic, depending on the tooth, the procedure, and the individual patient.
For patients who dislike the sound, vibration, or sensation traditionally associated with dental treatment, laser dentistry can offer a different treatment experience.
Dental Implants
Our LightWalker® also has a role in implant dentistry.
We use digital technology to carefully plan our implants before surgery, combining our 3D CBCT imaging and Primescan digital impressions to assess the available bone and plan the intended implant position.
The laser can then complement this digital workflow during appropriate surgical and healing procedures.
After implant placement, we may use photobiomodulation (PBM) as part of our post-operative protocol. PBM uses laser energy with the goal of supporting healing and helping manage post-operative discomfort and inflammation.
The LightWalker® can also be used to manage soft tissue around implants and as part of treatment for conditions such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis when clinically appropriate.
Soft-Tissue Procedures
The precision of the LightWalker® makes it useful for many smaller soft-tissue procedures throughout the mouth.
Depending on the individual situation, we may use the laser for procedures such as:
Gingivectomies
Gum recontouring
Frenectomies
Crown lengthening
Other minor oral surgical procedures
The ability to precisely treat soft tissue while helping control bleeding can make these procedures more comfortable and manageable for both the patient and the dental team.
Photobiomodulation — Supporting Healing & Comfort
Not every use of our laser involves cutting or removing tissue.
The Fotona LightWalker® can also be used for photobiomodulation, or PBM. This uses laser energy differently, with the goal of supporting the body’s natural healing response and helping manage discomfort and inflammation.
We incorporate PBM following selected procedures, including root canals and implant surgery, as part of our approach to supporting post-treatment comfort and healing.
For us, this is an important part of laser dentistry. The technology isn’t only helping us perform certain procedures—it can also play a role in the patient’s experience afterward.
