Essix retainers are dental appliances that help maintain the position of your teeth after orthodontic treatment. These clear, thin molds cover your teeth and prevent them from shifting back to their original position.
How do Essix retainers work?
After orthodontic treatment, your teeth will continue to shift and assume new positions in your mouth when under constant pressure. Once braces are removed, you’ll wear your Essix retainers overnight to maintain proper positioning. The retainer may also be used to make minor corrections to slightly misaligned teeth if needed.
How long will I wear my Essix retainer?
Once your braces are removed, your teeth will naturally begin to return to their original position. The retainer is used to prevent this shifting from occurring by holding the teeth in their new position. While it’s different for everyone, most people will have to wear their retainer for a few years after their braces have been removed.
The Essix retainer is worn every day for the first 3 months and then only at night for the remaining time. We’ll advise you on the length of time you should wear yours for the best results!
