Bridges – Post Op Instructions

Bridges – Post Op Instructions

Proper care after a bridge has been placed can help prevent dislodging of the bridge and the formation of cavities.

Any numbness you’re experiencing from the anesthetic will last approximately two hours. Until the anesthetic wears off, be careful not to drink hot liquids or bite your lip, cheek, or tongue.

After the procedure, you will receive a temporary bridge until your permanent bridge is ready.

While you have your temporary bridge, remember to:

  1. Eat soft foods and avoid sticky foods like chewing gum and caramel candies.
  2. Be gentle when brushing and refrain from flossing until your permanent restoration is in place.
  3. Use a salt water rise to reduce symptoms such as minor bleeding or swelling.
  4. Should the temporary bridge become dislodged, book an appointment to have it replaced as soon as possible. Waiting too long can cause the teeth to shift and the bridge to fit incorrectly.

Once you receive your permanent bridge, remember to:

  1. Brush the bridge daily, just as you would your natural teeth, and use a floss threader or super floss to floss under the bridge.
  2. Look out for abnormal symptoms. While it’s normal to experience some sensitivity to cold, you shouldn’t feel any throbbing or consistent pain.
  3. Use a salt water rinse to help with any short-term heat or cold sensitivity.
  4. Have your bite assessed within the first 48 hours. If your bite is uneven, we can adjust the bridge so your mouth feels normal and there is no unnecessary wear on the bridge.
