What are the types of dental fillings available?
Today, there are several different material types of dental fillings available, including gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper), or tooth-coloured plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings. You can also have your fillings made from glass ionomer, a material that contains glass particles, which is used in a similar way to the use of composite resin fillings.
While there are many different types of fillings available, your dentist will recommend the best filling type for your tooth. This recommendation is based on the location of your tooth, the extent of the decay, the cost of filling material, and your insurance coverage.
Caring for your teeth with fillings
In order to properly maintain your fillings, you need to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, using antibacterial mouthwash, and regularly visiting your dentist for cleanings.
Your dentist may take regular X-rays of your fillings if they suspect that one of your fillings is cracked or leaking (when the sides of the filling don't fit tightly against the tooth). Having a cracked or leaking filling can allow debris and saliva to seep down between the filing and the tooth, which can then lead to tooth decay.
If your tooth becomes overly sensitive, if you notice a crack in your filling, if you feel a sharp edge, or if the piece your filling is missing, call your dentist right away for an appointment. The sooner any issues can be resolved, the better your oral health will be.
